Well, you can check the website of your hardware manufacturer.

Is it a laptop or a PC?
When upgrading a RAM, you should firstly check if your CPU can support it.
Example for my CPU on my laptop :
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 720 @ 1.60GHz, 1597 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)

You can find that information in System information clicking Windows Key + R on the keyboard and then type:
msinfo32

Now i go to google and search about:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 720

Which links me to this site :
http://ark.intel.com/products/43122/Int ... e-1_60-GHz

Under "Memory Specifications", you can see :
Max Memory Size (dependent on memory type) 8 GB

Which means, that my CPU won't support more than 8 GB RAM.

"dependent on memory type" - means which DDR you have, normally it's DDR3 if it's a laptop.

Normally when you upgrading RAM, there is not much changes you need to do with the BIOS, sometimes the BIOS requires an update and if you do that, make sure you do a backup of your BIOS so you won't mess up things.
I would anyway run some diagnostics tools to the RAM to see if something is wrong with the memory cards and so.
You have a build in tool in Windows when you open "Run" by clicking Windows Key + R on the keyboard and typing :
mdsched.exe

And then click on :
"Restart Now and Check for Problems"

If you get anything in the logs, feel free to take a photo and snap it in here and i'll try to help you out further.
